Emotional Honesty

Definition:

Share real feelings and thoughts so readers understand what you went through.

Tips:

  • Be honest about how you felt—even if it was confusing or hard.
  • Don't try to sound perfect—real stories include mistakes and learning.
  • Use words that show your emotions, like nervous, excited, or embarrassed.
  • Think about how you changed because of what happened.
  • It's okay to keep some things private—share what helps tell your story.

Strategies:

Feelings First

Before writing a scene, write down how you felt during that moment.

Inside and Outside

Describe what happened and what you were thinking at the same time.

Why It Mattered

After each scene, write a sentence explaining why it was important to you.

Examples:

Before:

Plain: 'I went to a new school.'

After:

Honest: 'I went to a new school and felt like I had a knot in my stomach all day.'
